What to look at first
Straw is a summer material because of what it lets through, not what it keeps out. The braid holds air against the crown so your head is not sitting in a closed pocket of heat, and a broad edge keeps the glare off your eyes while you read or dig or wait for a table outside.
Paper straw is the workhorse here. It takes a fold without cracking, which is why so many of these roll flat for a bag, and it holds its brim shape again once you open it out. Raffia is the stiffer, more textured cousin, better on a shelf at home than crushed into a carry-on.
